Cholesterol drugs for children? Are we dying for profits?

How pure would it look with Joe Camel on there?

advertisement

Americans have lost their collective minds. That's all I can figure on the heels of the announcement that children as young as eight are now being prescribed dangerous cholesterol lowering drugs to combat heart disease.

There is no doubt that we have a generation ravaged by diabetes and obesity. but these drugs have never been tested for long term effects on children.

Children are not small adults and the long term implications of treatments won't be known for years, even decades.

What's more this is a classic, short term reaction in our society; when in doubt offer some pharma remedy to treat the symptoms rather than address the underlying problem.

The real problem is that we have had agribusiness and petrochemical companies controlling the food supply for more than a decade.

Our food has been transformed by a partnering of the Agent Orange makers of Dow, Dupont and Monsanto who have been feeding Americans untested, genetically altered forms of foods in conjunction with the processing by big tobacco, Phillip Morris who owns Nabisco, Kraft and dozens more trusted brands under the new name Altria Group.

Is it really any surprise that the companies responsible for products that have serious adverse health effects or slow death would make a food system that creates a population of sick people?

Americans better start demanding to know what we are swallowing because the handwriting is on the wall. It is a simple fact that you are what you eat. Thanks to a corrupt and spineless Congress, a system of industry controlled government has fed profits at the expense of human health and the environment.

For nearly a decade I have tracked the legislation, politics, science and spin surrounding the genetically altered foods. My research has braqnched off into other areas of the FDA and USDA policy and the truth is an ugly picture of a Nation that is dying for profits.

The Congress has destroyed the economy and Iraq, but the oil companies and contractors are flourishing. So too it the identical picture in the food and drug business. Corporate profits are at the expense of the trusting public.

Anyone who believes that the unseen hand of Congress is manifesting any better results is sadly mistaken. We are being fed a boatload of %$#@ no matter what measure you use.

Nature will not bend to the will of Congress. As rates of illness soar and food allergies skyrocket, I continue to wonder how long it will be before the American media begins to talk about what has been done to our food! We are a Nation dying for profits and children on statins is a symptom that should serve as a wake up call.

I think were being fed something worse...

While we let our corporations grow our food supply in other countries because it generates more profits we tax payers spend mountains of cash maintaining an expanded food testing program.

How much money would we save for alternative government programs, like healthier school lunches, if we didnt have to test giant volumes of food as it crosses our borders. Plus sending inspectors on trips across the globe to examine the standards of foreign food companies.

Beyond saving money our food supply would be alot more secure.

Expanded food testing? Not a chance, there are fewer inspectors than 30 years ago for the basic oversight. The gmo foods have never been subjected to human health testing. We have factory food handling that rival Upton Sinclair's time. No, testing costs are not a factor it's lobbying costs that allow such unsafe conditions to flourish that we need to worry about.

As for the imports, they're hardly as much of a problem as the routine fumigating and storage issues. Importing has it's own problems but the agribusiness giants, ADM and Cargill are the same corporations controlling the food from abroad as at home. It's one big fleecing of the consumers, that part you have hit right on the bulls eye.

The USDA has even prevented one meat packer, Creekstone Farms, from doing their own testing of their animals to certify that they are free of BSE (mad cow disease). The USDA claims in its suit that the tests are "worthless", even though these are the same tests the government uses to test the randomly selected 40,000 of the 35 million cows slaughtered each year. It's also the same tests the European Union uses to test all cattle.

The case was decided in Creekstone's favor in 2007, but the USDA chose to file an appeal which is still moving through the courts. The real reason, it seems, is that the meatpacking mega-corporations have exerted their influence on the department. They worry that if one producer tests, then all the producers will be forced by the market to test their animals. Wouldn't that be a shame...

That Creekstone case was a really telling point in our food safety and free markets, eh? I forbid my kiddies to eat ground beef a few years ago for just this reason. While we've always been super careful about foods, this turned me against anything ground from anywhere. What's worse than knowing that even the most vigilant producers are prohibited from doing safety tests?

This is not something that children should ever be medicated for. The doctors should be sending these kids to nutritionists and adjusting their diets, not pumping them full of pharmaceuticals.

I have border line high cholesterol and all my doctors have tried to put me on them. I simply refuse, my heart and arteries are healthy and I see no reason to go on them.

To put a child on them is unthinkable improve the diet and put the child on fish oil, along with a less fatty diet.

There is a great deal of research that is being done on statins and some of the results are frightening. One of the side affects is a loss of memory. It appears much like alzheiner's disease, one lady was almost admitted to a nursing home but the doctor doing the study at USC San Diego, took her off the statins and she got better.

Our society is depending way to much on these medications when looking at herbs and natures remedy's many times is all we really need to do.

You're right about depending too much on drugs, especially when the side effects are worse than foregoing the treatment. It always amazes me that drug ads include the list of serious and fatal effects the segue into the happy voice saying live better. We've lost our collective perspective.

This is what my grandfather is going through right now. He had a mild stroke but had no permanent damage and they put him on these drugs. My poor grandmother is so upset about it because her husband is not himself she's called me on the verge of tears. He can't remember anything, he gets confused easily. My grandparents are in their late 70's and used to be on no prescription drugs, active and living in a cabin on a quiet lake in Wisconsin. They do their own yard work and are very healthy people but this one drug is taking my grandfather's memory and could take their independence away from them if it gets worse. I wish they would go somewhere for a second opinion.

One of the more tragic things about all these drugs is that so many people think that a doctor writing a prescription automatically means it is the best route to go.

Most doctors are pressed for time, know little to nothing about nutrition and natural remedies and treat the symptoms with the latest pharma option. I hope your grandmother does take control of their fate and go for another opinion.

The Drug industry have decided they are going to make their next fortune on statins, and they are going to keep introducing more alleged reasons why we should all be on them from cradle to the grave

The people responsible for this mess...well, they are either brain addled due to too many drugs or are lining their pockets - no way could this be happening through honest evaluation of the options.

The petrochemical companies like Monsanto have their hands in both foods and drugs. On the one side we swallow toxic additives and the other treatments to relieve the effects. They have something for you to swallow in both the cause and effect.

If you look at the big picture objectively you see the systematic destruction of low cost natural sources in favor of things that increase dependence on corporate sources. It's the reason marijuana is outlawed when statins are encouraged, safety and effectiveness take a back seat to corporate profits and control.

Btw,where is that big Fatty. My POT is not illegal. The Marijuana Stamp Tax Act of 1937 was ruled unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in 1969 and instructed the Johnson administration to act accordingly. They didn't,because the Nixon Adm. took power and took the same body of law that was the Marijuana Stamp Tax Act and put it under the umbrella of the Dangerous Drugs and Abuse Act of 1970,equalizing it through psychological tactics, misinformation and propaganda with manmade adulterants designed to enslave.Marijuana was/is not illegal to possess for the private citizen, only for those seeking to make a profit... corporations...etc . without the Tax Stamp applied to the product..as is tobacco and it's stamp on the single packages of cigarrettes and cartons. The ones who profit off the "illegality " of marijuana is the Drug Cartels and the law enforcement institutions and the ones who are "Paid off" to keep this truth to themselves,by bribes ,making them complicit in this crime against us.That is how they retain control of the marketing and distribution. from my comment on... http://drknow.newsvine.com/_news/2008/06/23/1602381-federal-marijuana-monopoly-challenged and my own research at Oklahoma University Law Center and the motions I filed in Cleveland County ,Norman,Oklahoma in 1995-1996. This is just one more example of anything goes if it will make money. Latest research shows that for most of us the higher our cholesterol the longer we can expect to live. Have a look at the argument set out here.

This paper provides a number of reasons why skepticism may be good for the health. Few people are aware of the danger of statin drugs. Few know the true story about fats and oils.

Interesting paper and not exactly what I was expecting. I guess I was thinking there would be a study but in many ways what you have added is better. The truth is that the frequently cited "studies" backing up claims for or against certain food products are based on limited studies that are designed to support a forgone conclusion.

One of the biggest frauds in this area is the promotion of soy as a wonderfood and the FDA endorsement that came with it. Weston Price is a wonderful source of myths and truths about soy and other foods and claims about health effects positive and negative. The bottom line is that all this is driven by profit motives and health claims are a great marketing tool that may have no relation to the food product that they are associated with. It is a dangerous world for consumers.

Hi Ann and thanks for the question, there's nothing that's too off topic for me and only mean spirited commenting is discouraged in my columns. :~)

A few points to be clear on before I offer my theories and research. I am not a doctor but did seven years of primary care in a bone marrow transplant-cancer research environment before stumbling into the area of toxic food elements. I back into most of the studies from following the money trails.

That means when a health claim of drug is made that addresses a problem I find who stands to benefit and who funds the studies, the legislative changes or approvals to make it possible. The bulk of my energies goes to exposing political and scientific fraud and those who perpetuate it.

That said there are vast numbers of hormone altering elements that have been increasing in our diets over time. Much of these are given to all animals produced in factory farm environments, beef, chickens, pigs and dairy cows.

The studies of the downstream effects are rare since the corporate funding for most studies is based on a don't look- don't find model and for over a decade the media has helped by remaining silent on the changes in the foods, focusing instead on the drug treatments that provide revenue.

Of all the changes one of the least reported and direct hormone altering elements is the Monsanto rBGH given to cows to hype the yield by eliminating their natural cycles. The treatments have been shown to elevate IGF-1 hormones and that is associated with increases in small cell cancers like breast and colon, increased diabetes and other skeletal diseases, which led to this being banned in the developed nations of the world. Even with those known causes, very little followup is done but we do see a population that has consumed this exhibiting the rates of associated diseases increase as one would expect given the increase consumption population wide.

The bottom line is that hormones are extraordinarily sensitive to changes and very little is understood about how they operate or what triggers cause them to function or malfunction. We know that diabetes is one manifestation of hormonal balances gone awry.

The best to hope at this point is that the general public begins to demand that regulatory agencies institute policies of tracking the health effects of these altered foods. The best defense is to know that the hidden dangers are designed to increase agribusiness profits are not weighed for negative effects on humans.

From an economic and health view the more you can stay with foods and sources that are created in the way that Nature intended, small, organic or at least free from profit hyping drug additives the better your health will be. Nature's way plus chemicals and drugs, plus profits will never beat the health benefits of nature alone.

Hopefully that gives you a bit of what you wanted, it is frustrating to have such a void in the study data when it comes to negative effects but folks pay for news that sells products, even there the truth is manipulated so the biggest benefit is sales.

I am not exactly impartial but there are many groups that I see as trusted sources. One that most folks know for cars and appliances is just as good with food and labeling issues, Consumers Union, publishers of Consumer Reports has a great staff and wonderful information.

The quickest way to give you the broadest number of sources is to send you to my film site. Go to the page on the resources tab and there are links to dozens of groups with all sorts of tools for digging into the toxic politics, front groups and science of the foods themselves and a link to CU noted above.

The recommendations list on my Newsvine column is filled with great information links too Just click on my name here in comments and it will take you to my column. That actually works for alll users!! Most links are named to describe them clearly. If you go scan through those you should find the type of voices you are looking for. Weston Price linked above is another great one. Be warned, your view of food will change forever though. :~)
