An Open Letter to Hillary Clinton

Dear Hillary,

By polling logic, I should be your supporter - Democrat, older woman, white, liberal. I was even in a dorm with you in college. I have pulled for you for years. But something this past summer fundamentally changed my responsibility to my children and grandchildren. In the time I have left in my life to protect them and others, I need to speak out.

I saw a News Hour piece on Maharastra, India, about farmers committing suicide. Monsanto, a US agricultural giant, hired Bollywood actors for ads telling illiterate farmers they could get rich (by their standards) from big yields with Monsanto's Bt (genetically engineered) cotton seeds. The expensive seeds needed expensive fertilizer and pesticides (Monsanto, again) and irrigation. There is no irrigation there. Crops failed. Farmers had larger debt than they'd ever experienced.

And farmers couldn't collect seeds from their own fields to try again (true since time immemorial). Monsanto "patents" their DNA-altered seeds as "intellectual property." They have a $10 million budget and a staff of 75 devoted solely to prosecuting farmers. Since the late 1990s (about when industrial agriculture took hold in India),166,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide and 8 million have left the land.

Farmers in Europe, Asia, Africa, Indonesia,South America, Central America and here, have protested Monsanto and genetic engineering for years.

What does this have to do with you?

You have connections to Monsanto through the Rose Law Firm where you worked and through Bill who hired Monsanto people for central food- related roles. Your Orwellian-named "Rural Americans for Hillary" was planned withTroutman Sanders, Monsanto's lobbyists.

Genetic engineering and industrialized food and animal production all come together at the Rose Law Firm, which represents the world's largest GE corporation (Monsanto), GE's most controversial project (DP&L's - now Monsanto's - terminator genes), the world's largest meat producer (Tyson), the world's largest retailer and a dominant food retailer (Walmart).

Tyson ties are next, then Walmart, then the $1,000 investment that turned into $100,000, and on and on...

That's a great link space guy and the story that Media Matters is "breaking" now was actually based on old information that everyone would be talking about now if the claim that Tim Russert and others keep repeating, Hillary has been thoroughly vetted, were true, rather than thoroughly white washed by corporate media!

HILLARY'S WATERGATE SCANDAL

By Jerry Zeifman
IN December 1974, as general counsel and chief of staff of the House Judiciary Committee, I made a personal evaluation of Hillary Rodham (now Mrs. Clinton), a member of the staff we had gathered for our impeachment inquiry on President Richard Nixon. I decided that I could not recommend her for any future position of public or private trust.

Why? Hillary's main duty on our staff has been described by as "establishing the legal procedures to be followed in the course of the inquiry and impeachment." A number of the procedures she recommended were ethically flawed. And I also concluded that she had violated House and committee rules by disclosing confidential information to unauthorized persons.

I agree people should go read the seed and learn who the corporate choice is for the Oval Office!

If our news organizations did their jobs this would come out before people go to the polls. Heck, we could have skipped the pain of having Hillary as Senator or Bush in the White House. There's no end to the possibilities for a better future if we did not have corporate interests keeping their favorite criminals in power.

MSNBC

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
When veteran field organizer Moses Mercado joined Obama's campaign, but his hire is "making waves," the Washington Post reports, because of his "other line of work -- as a lobbyist with Ogilvy Government Relations who is registered to represent several dozen big-name clients, including the National Rifle Association, the Carlyle Group, the Blackstone Group, Monsanto, Pfizer Inc., United Health Group, Sempra Energy and Constellation Energy."

More: "His resume seems to contradict one of Obama's central themes on the campaign trail -- that as an outsider he can fend of the powerful business interests that he has argued have contributed to the income gap between rich and poor and has frustrated attempts to address issues such as high prescription drug costs and global warming."

The campaign's response: "They have not settled on exactly what role Mercado will play, but he will not take on any job until he has ceased his lobbying work. Obama aides said yesterday no one can work on the campaign and still be registered on behalf of clients as a lobbyist, and Mercado will not be exempted from that requirement

That's ok, Pamela.....he taking a "leave" from the Lobby job. Maybe he will be appointed Sec. of Agriculture ,if Obama wins, and not have to go back.
[Like Cheney...took a leave from Haliberton.]

Not to worry.

Sadly you can't turn around in Washington and not bump into a lobbyist. While lobbying has had a serious negative effect on government, that's the form of communicating with lawmakers. The problem is Congress who make laws to repay lobbyists and corporate interests for support.

It's bad when officials who take their time in service to cash in getting favors. The question becomes who is paying them and what are they getting for that. We'll need to look at them one at a time and see what they lobby for.

Here's the rest of that article which makes your out of context quote look like its a bit biased. Obama isn't taking money from these folks and Hillary is. In a pay to play system that's worth factoring into the equation.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the candidate does not disqualify Washington lobbyists from from endorsing or advising him. "The way we address this issue is we don't take money from federal lobbyists," Burton said. "It's not a perfect symbol but it's his best effort to show the sort of administration he is going to have."

Hodges and Shapiro aren't the only federal lobbyists inside Obama's campaign. The Washington Post previously reported that Moses Mercado, a veteran political adviser to the likes of Dick Gephardt's former presidential bids, was negotiating last fall to become an adviser to Obama. Mercado was registered in Washington to lobby on behalf of several several corporate clients, including AT&T.

Mercado said today he ultimately decided to skip becoming a paid adviser and instead is volunteering his advice and time in hopes of sidestepping the questions about being a lobbyist on the Obama payroll. Mercado was departing today to Nevada to help Obama with that state's caucuses.

"It actually is better to do it this way. I don't want anything from it," Mercado said. "I wanted to do it for other reasons. I thought he was the right candidate for the country."

As for Obama's frequent criticism of Washington lobbyists, Mercado said, "I don't get sensitive about it. I don't take it personally. What he is trying to do is a good thing. What he wants is some transparency to the process."

A Post review of Obama's payroll, advisers and endorsements found several other Washington lobbyists. Obama staffer Buffy Wicks was registered in 2007 to lobby for the United Food and Commercial Workers union, while two fellow campaign aides were registered in 2006 to lobby for the Democratic-leaning Center for American Progress.
Obama's early state coordinator, Steve Hildebrand was registered since 2005 to represent an environmental firm but filed a report terminating his lobbying registration around the time he joined the campaign last January.

Hillary Clinton's campaign, which accepts lobbyists' donations and is now trailing in the polls, has sought to question Obama's commitment to his lobbying ban. In a debate Saturday night in New Hampshire, she noted that Obama's campaign co-chairman in New Hampshire, Jim Demers, is a state-based lobbyist whose clients include pharmaceutical companies. He is not registered at the federal level.

It is not like the CEO of Halliburton taking millions in stock options and then being in the White House. Ogilvy is huge and Moses isn't a lobbyist for any of the clients you named. I'm not saying I know what he will try to do but he isn't involved with Monsanto or the agriculture but Democratic government issues. You find me a former Monsanto, Dow, Dupont, Halliburton or Exxon lobbyist and we'll talk conflict.

Moses C. Mercado
Senior Vice President, Ogilvy Government Relations

Prior to joining Ogilvy Government Relations, Moses Mercado served as the Deputy Executive Director, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for Governor Howard Dean at the Democratic National Committee. He was responsible for all outreach and communications to the U.S. House and Senate, Governors, Mayor's and local elected officials. He also advised the Governor on Congressional Leadership and elected officials policies and activities. He has been appointed by the National Democratic Chairman Governor Howard Dean as a DNC-At-Large member serving on the Resolutions Committee.

I'm not sure what your point is here. No one has shown me any clients that would serve my interests or those opposing my interests. As far as I've seen he is a liaison between the States and the Federal government.

If you have additional information, please put it out there. I am happy to look at any and all material that gets at the truth. While you may choose to paint me as politically aligned, my interest has always been and continues to be pure food and opposition to agribusiness and gmos.

I am a equal opportunity attacker of corrupt political alliances and go on both sides of the aisle following the money. If you have a decent lead on the guy and there is dirt there I will be the first to roach him for it.

You can't though compare a small local law firm with a giant global operation in terms of a client list. Companies like Microsoft or IBM or Chase bank have clients of every stripe too, that doesn't mean every one of their employees is tied to the actions of every client.

It becomes a matter of looking at the individual employee job and client relationships. The person dealing with real estate in Topeka is not responsible for the one managing the hedge fund in Tokyo. Let's look at these in a real world view of what each operation reflects.

Rose Law firm is not operating around the globe offering advertising and marketing for thousands of businesses. Their client list is far more of a reflection of the values there. As I said if there's dirt get it out there but don't accuse me of political bias or self interest when that's totally unfounded.

As far as the Troutman PR stunt, what is the point there? Some astroturf move designed to scam the public wasn't my doing. If rural Americans for Hillary isn't a scam than the accurate reporting of the event shouldn't be a problem. Talk trash they can eat it.

Washington Post: Obama & Edwards, hypocrites on lobbyists donations
by areyouready, Mon Oct 22, 2007 at 11:40:33 AM EST

Wow, Washington Post is on a roll. Finally MSM is calling out those two hypocrites on a variety of issues.

Yesterday was an editorial article demolishing Obama's hypocricy on Iran.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con tent/article/2007/10/20/AR2007102000984. html
A Difference on Iran?

In fact the two leading Democratic candidates have advocated pretty much the same policy for Iran, just as they have for Iraq. In the case of Iran, the strategy is, for the most part, centrist and sensible and doesn't differ much from what the Bush administration is doing. Now, trailing in the polls and sensing a political opportunity, Mr. Obama is trying to portray Ms. Clinton as a reckless saber-rattler. That is irresponsible and -- given the ease with which the charge can be rebutted -- probably naive, as well.

Today is some facts check on Obama & Edwards' connection to lobbysts.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-chec ker/2007/10/obama_edwards_and_the_lobbyi ng.html
Obama, Edwards, and the Lobbying Industry

Exhibit A in the drive by both Obama and Edwards to "clean up" Washington is their refusal to accept "a dime" from "Washington lobbyists."But it turns out that both Edwards and Obama have adopted a narrow definition of the word lobbyist, which raises questions about the effectiveness of their campaign.

They still take money from state lobbyists.

They make no attempt to distinguish between lobbyists for big corporations and lobbyists for small non-profits. They treat a lobbyist for Haliburton in the same way as a lobbyist for child poverty or cancer research.

They accept money from former lobbyists and future lobbyists.

As Clinton has pointed out, her rivals have no problem taking money from the people who pay the lobbyists, and give them their "marching orders." (ABC News debate, August 19, 2007.)

They have no problem about taking money from people representing other "special interests," e.g. trial lawyers and the hedge fund industry

Numbers!

So far this year, according to Opensecrets.org, Edwards has taken more than $8 million from lawyers and law firms, some of whom employ the federally-registered lobbyists whose lucre he refuses to touch. Obama is not far behind: $7.5 million.

Obama has emphasized that he does not take money from PhRMA, the powerful lobbying arm of the pharmaceutical industry. On the other hand, he does not seem to mind taking money from senior employees of PhRMA members, such as Pfizer and Eli Lilly. Campaign finance records show that he has raised about $250,000 in pharmaceutical-related contributions this year. (Clinton collected $269,000.) He has also not been averse to helping out Illinois-based pharmaceutical companies with "tariff suspensions."

Nor does refusing to accept money from federal lobbyists prevent the Obama and Edwards campaigns from accepting in-kind contributions from registered lobbyists in the form of volunteer work. See this Roll Call article. My colleague, Matt Mosk, recently reported that the Obama campaign is hiring a top lobbyist, Moses Mercado, as a senior adviser. Mercado's accounts with the Ogilvy Government Relations lobbyist group included Pfizer, United Health Group, and the Blackstone Group, which paid millions of dollars to Ogilvy to defeat proposals for doubling taxes paid by private equity managers. Mercado has said he will take a "leave of absence" from Ogilvy in order to work for Obama.

In the meantime, the Obama campaign returned a $250 contribution from a small-time federal lobbyist named Gigi Sohn, who works for a non-profit organization called Public Knowledge that advocates digital consumer rights. Sohn has, however, been permitted to help the campaign as a volunteer. In an interview with Roll Call, Sohn described Obama's position on lobbyists as "absurd." She said that the loopholes in the anti-lobbyist campaign were "big enough to drive a truck through

Pamela, at least Hillary's not lying about it. BTW Does she still work for the Rose Law Firm?

When we think we have the "Cat by the tail"......Look all around you...to be sure it wasn't just licking it's own.

Pamela,

This is a wonderfully done editorial and a woman after my own heart.

As I was reading this wonderfully thought out and information packed article, I kept saying to myself: are you sure Pamela didn't write this article? And guess what, I just watched your film, Roundup Ready Nation, last night. I can't believe what I saw, and how did you get so much information in there, is this some sort of magic, are thee a witch? I was shocked at how Monsanto and the industry thugs are indoctrinating our school children with propaganda, they might as well hand out cigarettes to them, not hyperbole, that wouldn't be any more dangerous.

Your film made me completely literate while reading this article, I felt so "in the loop". Thank you Pamela for the magnanimous work and effort you put into that film, and for so many people who are now and who will be aware of this dangerous threat, preparing the stage for a mass movement to shut down Monsanto and all the others who wittingly poison us all...

I am fairly certain that is a criminal offense and it is shocking. I'm sure they never figured on getting caught, tee hee hee. Go me!!

Now for the real credit for getting so much in. It goes partly to my decade of research and more to countless hours of my kiddies watching and saying, enough of that, move on. It honestly would have been 18 hours long on my own. I'm so glad you loved it and it did give you the whole up the curve, full picture feeling that no amount of reading about it really manages to do.

I just do not see the MSM or Obama bringing this up.

Remember, she gets a pass.

No one challenges her.

Remember Tim Russert and the drivers license for illegals follow up? Nothing from him since.

What about Chris Matthews and the (truthful) observation about Hillary not being where she is because of how she is married to and his (pathetic) response/apology the next night to all woman, that he did not respond to Hillary as a candidate, but rather as a woman,

What about Hillary's recent rant against off-shore accounts being used by the rich.....conviently leaving out her and Bill's off-shores.

Hillary gets a pass on all counts. Why? I'll never know.

Will White Water, Rose Law firm, her eight (8) years as/as not co-president be an issue, her (or Bills) Health Care plan disaster, on and on and on, be brought up and pounded home?

I doubt it.

How people really see her amazes me.........

If the Americans could get up the curve we'd be cooking with gas. I just seeded a story from France where the Parliment rejected further planting of Monsanto gmo corn and 77% of consumers surveyed said they supported the ban. There one form is used for animal feed and they won't eat it!

In America 75% of consumers have never heard of gmos and the ones who have don't have the right to know where it is in the food supply. Quite a stark contrast of public education, consumer rights and free markets!

I just came across some internet sites regarding "Rural Americans for Hillary", have you heard anything about them? It seems this group is a front for Monsanto via the Troutman Sanders lobby firm. She's already been bought by them alright.

Go hamid, I've made you dangerous sweetie. How proud I am that you nailed that, good job. That was a lobbying event in the Washington offices of Troutman and Sanders. ABC did a report about it a while ago. PR people name things so when the press releases come out it spins well. Go ABC for flagging it too!

Pamela and Hamid I ask--how can John Edwards back Hillary after that press release? He can't but if he waits he can support her if she is the nominee then he can still have a place in her cabinet. Things that make you go hmm...

If he teamed with Hillary he would be on my dirtbag list forever. Plus, she can't be the nominee, she just can't.

I second that, it would clearly indicate to me that everything he claimed in the campaign was a lie...

Sorry sweetie, there are a lot of us who would love to support a woman; it's just unfortunate that this one supports corporate interests that don't help women or children or human health or the environment. Shucks!

Until I see these same concerns applied to what's going on in "human engineering" I guess there's nothing to worry about.

What the heck does that mean? Are you sure the comment goes with this article?
