Conquoring Technoratti for Dummies

It's not much of a secret that some of the users at Newsvine are technically challenged. Hmm, there's not even any reason to pretend, for technically terrible, yours truely comes instantly to mind. It is probably a safe bet, that few could be worse than me. Some users who know that all too well, are probably scratching their heads now, wondering if this isn't actually posted to the wrong category.

Last week's article by Jim Dent, I Link Therefore I Am, gave tips for seeding in proper format. It sounded simple enough but as only a technophobe can manage it became a huge cluster%$#@ for half the helpers in the thread. Extra posting by Jim and the 9 step plan that Aine had written, and in the end it still took Aine, the technical angel some hand holding to get the seed button on to my space bar!

If you want a button on your tool bar, it's actually very easy, smirks and grins, for normal people to. Just read the thread, check Aine's 9 steps and if there's a dopey question that you have follow my questions down the thread. Asked and answered, No it's not here in the article body in HTML but will be linked below in the comment box, where the Vine staff in their infinite wisdom make it so click buttons do the code.

Thanks to their patience I too can seed with a click now. I was so excited with my new found powers, it seemed there should be other things that were technically doable too. For weeks I had been trying to get a Technoratti link for my column. I don't even remember how I found out I could have one but someone said it was easy to do.

There again, I sought help from fellow viners. Oluseye Bassir had a lot of listings, of Newsvine posts, on the Technoratti. I wrote to him to ask for help. A few hopeless attempts to guide me, he linked me to a wonderful step by step by Corey Spring. No I won't forget to give the links to these too but no matter how carefully I followed the instructions, and they are simple and clear, when it came time to click the button that says, Release the Spiders, Claim your Blog. The wheel would spin and FAILED.

After many hours and failed attempts I resigned myself to the idea that some of will just never get pinged. That was before the taste of cyber-power from my seed button. So bound and determined a few days ago, I went at it again. No luck, nothing worked and it suddenly occurred to me that maybe it wasn't me. Newsvine had just moved their data center and they add all kinds of code things all the time. In that case the problem would be one for the McCain Punk'd man himself. I sent a note to Mike D.

Lo and behold it took him about three minutes to reply that he'd looked at the code and the links and the site and yes, Corey's instructions needed to be revised. Never mind I couldn't type a note in the time it took Mike D to discover and solve the problem but to my amazement and delight he did. One step was changed. Take the advanced claim steps to the point where Corey said to add it to your homepage and put in the space in the column where you can add recommendations instead.

I went to my column in the place with recommendations, copied and pasted only the code inside the "...", just the way Corey showed it and released the spiders. CONGRATULATIONS is what Technoratti said. For all who have helped me and my kind. to all those in around Newsvine, who do the things that make all this work, bless your hearts. It is a miracle that any of it works!

For those who aren't technical, tip toe into the details just a little bit from time to time. There's help out there and cross my heart, if I can do it you can too. Start building confidence by going to claim your blog at Technoratti and get some "ping" to be proud of

Jim Dent ~ I Seed Therefore I AM

Aine MacDermot ~ Angel of Newsvine and Newsvine Help

Corey Spring ~ How to Claim Your Newsvine Column on Technoratti impressively, one minor revision after a full year and even at that we all know it is Mike D's fault!! :~)

Mike D ~ The McCain Event, in his own words and follow on coverage in the Mike D Blog

As much as it saddens me to leave you all alone I'll be locked in a sound booth more than not for several days starting tomorrow. I'm sure some will add technical comments without me. I'll check in at night, fully confident you'l all be fabulous on your own.

You will all be fine, but there may never be enough help for me, apologies Oluseye. My memory can go 200 miles up calling for help and when things are good, tsk tsk. Could it be blamed on lack of a comment edit maybe?

Yeah, that article I wrote is nearly a year old - so it's not too surprising it's a bit outdated.

I have a number of complaints with Technorati, the first being how long it can take to crawl your content. To make sure everything happens as it should, I ping Technoriati myself with a perl script I wrote. I know that the ping goes through because I can watch it happen, and yet there are days when it will take hours for it crawl or update its index, and because their index is sorted by the time/date of the post and not when it was crawled, your post can end up debuting five or ten pages deep on a hot topic.

That leads to the other problem: hot topics. You can and will be scrolled off the first page for a given tag if it is popular within 10 minutes. They go by so fast, nobody really benefits from the traffic.

And yet there are exceptions. If you happen to write about a hot search topic, but not a hot writing topic, you can bring in a lot of one-off hits from Technorati and increasingly Google BlogSearch.

I probably average less than 40 page views for my blog posts (which are posted here if suitable) over their entire lifespan, but I've had two this year that brought in about 600-700 each from BlogSearch and Technorati, simply because lots of people were searching while few were taking time to write.

These aren't niche topics mind you, so that old mantra of "write about things other people aren't" only works if people are still actually looking for that stuff in the first place.

I find these days that I get more traffic from Google BlogSearch than Technorati, and from what I gather, that is the new global trend. And rightly so, BlogSearch can be pinged and updated within seconds. Technorati? Don't hold your breath.

According to the documentation Google BlogSearch takes its cues from weblogs.com, which takes standard XML-RPC pings. You may be able to sign up and get an account there if they offer them and do it some other way, I don't know, I use the XML-RPC pings.

If you can't generate those, you can go here and try feeding it your RSS feed of "pameladrew.newsvine.com/_feeds/rss2/master?articles" without the quotes, and without the leading http:// that I've purposely left off.

I do not know if Google will accept that or not, because this really needs to be /rss.xml, not that silly dynamic URL. I would also note that I am far from an SEO expert though, so no promises that you'll get more traffic even if it works out.

Thanks for that. It really doesn't make total sense to me, but that's okay. I am willing to bake cookies for Aine and exploit her goodness and sweet tooth, until I know enough to be informed in the ways of the cyber-skilled, enough to limp along anyway!! She gets it all you know, its good to have friends that are smart when you can't get through life on your own!! :~)

I didn't need a special script to ping Technorati, all I did was drag the Ping link (for my Newsvine column) from my Technorati page up to my toolbar, and when I feel like it, I ping Technorati. Still, it would be nice if we didn't have to do that manually (pingomatic.com could automatically notify all the relevant places if that pinging service was implemented).

Mike D. already coded the [rel="tag"] attribute into the HTML for the tags we add to our Seeds and Articles, so that when Technorati does crawl the site, it recognizes those tags.

Next on the Agenda : We teach Pamela Drew all about RSS feeds.

*grin*

That's fantastic, let's wait a few weeks until the sound crew finish teaching me the fine points of doing voice over. So many new tricks for the old dog this month. BTW what exactly does it mean when you say, drag the Ping link (for my Newsvine column) from my Technorati page up to my toolbar. Is it something on the Technoratti page? Drag is one I've learned. *grin*

Well, once you're registered at Technorati and your blog is claimed, if you go to this page, you should see a list of all the blogs you claimed (if it's only the newsvine blog, you should see that there). Next to each blog is a link : Ping that has your blog's ping link (not the one I'm linking to here, that's just an example).

If you drag YOUR blog's ping link to the Bookmarks Toolbar, you can use it to manually "ping" Technorati when you've added content to your column at Newsvine. Best to use it only once per day (my opinion) after you've done all the updating you're going to do for the day.
