Neil Bush Cashing in on No Child Left Behind

advertisement

A company headed by President Bush's brother and partly owned by his parents is benefiting from Republican connections and federal dollars targeted for economically disadvantaged students under the No Child Left Behind Act.

With investments from his parents, George H.W. and Barbara Bush, and other backers, Neil Bush's company, Ignite! Learning, has placed its products in 40 U.S. school districts and now plans to market internationally.

At least 13 U.S. school districts have used federal funds available through the president's signature education reform, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, to buy Ignite's portable learning centers at $3,800 apiece.

The law provides federal funds to help school districts better serve disadvantaged students and improve their performance, especially in reading and math.

But Ignite does not offer reading instruction, and its math program will not be available until next year.

The federal Department of Education does not monitor individual school district expenditures under the No Child program, but sets guidelines that the states are expected to enforce, spokesman Chad Colby said.

Ignite executive Tom Deliganis said that "some districts seem to feel OK" about using No Child money for the Ignite purchases, "and others do not."

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Wasn't it enough that Neil Bush made $1 Billion off of the savings and loan debacle? LINK

Ah, to be born on third base and to be allowed to steal home by paying off the umpires.

Outstanding point. Neil and the family connections netted him a sweet deal there. Another note is that the Bush family donations raised for Hurricaine Katrina victims was tied to buying Ignite software. There are some links to connect a few of the deals and trails for Neil Mallon Bush, Albert Casey's RTC coverup/rescue and the Bush Family of Bankrupcies.

It's an endless web that details how the Bonesmen are the Teflon Dons of American government. Stamp it classified; shred it or get lucky enough to lose essential crime evidence, in a Federal Records facility like Oklahoma City or WTC7. Once the evidence is gone the problem of justice is solved. Only enemy combatants can be held without evidence.

You know, I despise the Bushes as much as anyone, but I think this part of the article pretty much kills any sort of scandal:

The federal Department of Education does not monitor individual school district expenditures under the No Child program, but sets guidelines that the states are expected to enforce, spokesman Chad Colby said.

Just because his brother is involved company that sells this stuff to school districts, doesn't mean there's any grand conspiracy. Now, if the government had a big huge contract that it FORCED all of the school districts to buy this stuff, that'd be a different story.... But this doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

It's not a scandal; it just doesn't pass the smell test. If Neil has a good product, go sell it without tapping any Federal funds.

There was a story that came out after Katrina that Laura Bush took advantage of a special exemption tax rule for Katrina recovery. The only problem was that she specified that her donations had to be used to buy software from her son's company. New software is just not at the top of my list for what devastated communities need to recover following Katrina.

Well at the end of the day there's hardly a lot of difference between Laura and Babs. They both married a George Bush!

Just because his brother is involved company that sells this stuff to school districts, doesn't mean there's any grand conspiracy.

I don't remember anyone saying that. The fact that Bush & Co. seem to have their pockets lined by every "great moral issue" that they push is a big deal. They also happen to be around every time Bush encounters a sticky situation.

Herbert Walker Bush- Big time investory in the Carlyle Group, a major investory in weapons trade, made plenty of money after 9/11, but was then forced to pull out due to pressure.

Marvin Bush- Head of security for the WTC at the time of 9/11.

Jeb Bush- Governer of the state that happened to be so devisive in the 2000 elections.

Neil Bush- Making money off of No Child Left Behind.

So you are right, the fact the Neil is making money off of this isn't the center of a grand conspiracy, the fact that a member of Bush & Co. is around all the time for major political events is.

I also forgot to mention Cheney, who while he didn't work for Haliburton anymore, certainly would have plenty of friends left in the business. Wouldn't you have friends in a business that you were in? Now they are responsible for ,I believe this sum to be correct but if it's incorrect it is only more, millions of dollars of mispent money in Iraq.

I despise No Child Left Behind. Any educational program that puts blame on teachers, forces a single line of education with no room for creativity, and cuts funding to the students that obviously need it most, is a ridiculously backwards program.

I also despise the way that Bush runs this country and I do think that corruption is abound.

That being said, I do not see anything in this article, other than family ties, that gives me any fear of nepotism. What would give me that fear is if it were explicitly shown that Ignite! did not benefit children and were still allowed to be used under the Act, that this were forced upon the schools as part of the Act, or if it were recommended by "government officials".

As it stands now, Ignite! may have earned just as much business if No Child Left Behind were not in place. The schools have their choice whether or not to buy the product and determine if it is overpriced. The company is using the free market system to earn money. Show me something more and I will change my opinion.

(No Child Left Behind is still the worst thing that could've happened to the US education system)

for those who doubt nepotism, please consider that there are different degrees and forms of coercion, and this story is merely one piece of an incredibly obvious timeline involving legislation or political or global events that have benefited the neo-conservative movement and its friends and family.

incredibly obvious.

disgusting. not only is NCLB a complete failure and a misguided approach to education, it was only a matter of time before something like this was exposed. the govt under bush continues to demonstrate that its only goal is to steer policy in such a way as to steal as much taxpayer money as possible, to basically launder the money up from the taxpayers, through the govt, into their own pockets.

Pamela -- Another excellent seed!

The Washington Post did a good story about Neil in 2003. It was called The Relatively Charmed Life Of Neil Bush

It covers many aspects of Neils life from the Silverado Savings and Loan scandal to some sexual encounters Neil admits to, although in a slightly dazed fashion!

Thanks, great to have the links and internet to share. The charmed lives of the Bushmen go back to Samuel and Prescott in the War Department - Supply Services. Peddling weapon, collecting war fortunes and Federal largess for five generations.
